The Russell Flagpole (10)

Probably the most famous landmark in this area is the flagpole which was chopped down by Maori chief Hone Heke, about 170 years ago, shortly after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. Despite efforts to strengthen it with metal it was chopped down 4 times as a sign of revolt against British rules.
