There are only two native mammals in New Zealand, and they are two species of bat, so before humans arrived birds were dominant. Although we have lost some of the more spectacular species, like the moa (but there is a project to genetically "de-extinct" them), we still have some nice birds. These are one of the more famous types, the tui, which has a distinctive white tuft under its throat and glossy dark green, blue, black plumage.
