Our National Day

Entry 126, on 2005-02-07 at 12:58:52 (Rating 1, Comments)

Here in New Zealand we don't really have an official national day. Some people say it is Waitangi Day - a commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the European settlers and the native Maoris about 150 years ago. At one point this was even called New Zealand Day.

I was asked this morning "when is Waitangi Day this year?" I answered "Hmmm, It was yesterday". The fact is, that unless we get a day off work as a result, most people don't care about Waitangi Day. A large proportion of the people are sick of the Treaty of Waitangi, and the politically correct racial policies in New Zealand.

The Treaty is often called our founding document, but how can something that only applies to a small part of the population be a relevant founding document? Also, the treaty is between Maori and the Queen (of England). While theoretically the Queen is still our head of state, in reality she is irrelevant. In my opinion, the sooner we become a republic and lose the Queen, and the Treaty, the better. Then maybe we can have a real national day everyone can relate to.
