Solo

Entry 165, on 2005-04-28 at 15:19:17 (Rating 1, Computers)

Recently, I have been working on a fairly major computer project which has struck a few problems because of communication difficulties with other people working on the same project. During my whole professional computing career (about 20 years now) I have been involved with working on small and medium size projects where I didn't need to work as part of a team. Now I have to work with other people, and I have to say that I think I prefer working on my own.

I think of programming, web site development, database design, and other work I do as being both technical and artistically creative tasks. I don't mean artistic in the superficial sense of including pretty graphics, I mean at the deeper level of elegant internal design - even if that aspect of the project is often never seen by anyone except its creator.

Working as a team or, much worse, as a committee is not the way to create a work of art, even in the context of a programming project. While this project is coming together quite well now it just doesn't feel right to share the creative process with others. I am definitely not a team player, so I think I will continue to work on smaller projects where possible in future, so that I can work solo.
